Auburn Stage - The Grand Theatre

Musical Theatre Productions brings this award-winning Sondheim smash-hit musical back to the London stage this spring.

Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Book by George Furth

From musical theatre's most renowned composer, COMPANY is largely regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre and the winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor, Robert, contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his friends – "those good and crazy people [his] married friends" – explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions.

COMPANY features a brilliantly brisk and energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best known songs. Every audience member will see reflections of themselves in at least one of the characters onstage.

COMPANY is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

RELAXED PERFORMANCE with ASL INTERPRETATION

Musical Theatre Productions is pleased to offer a relaxed performance of COMPANY on Saturday March 2nd at 1:30pm, sponsored by Modern Aesthetics.

This performance is designed to provide a comfortable and accessible experience for everyone. During this evening’s presentation, noise from the house/audience will be welcome, and the house lights will be left on and there will be an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. The quality of the performance is still in place, with light and sound levels adjusted to create a sensory-friendly environment. Volunteers will be available to assist all patrons throughout the event and there will be a designated relaxation area available for anyone needing a break from the show. Patrons are welcome to bring their electronic devices into the theatre and are free to come and go as they wish throughout the performance. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend this fully inclusive experience with the understanding that this performance is “Hush-Free,” and there will be a certain level of sound and movement throughout the show.

This performance is designed to provide a comfortable and accessible experience for everyone - and is especially an opportunity to welcome anyone who may not otherwise be able to enjoy the theatrical experience such as those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delays, Neuromuscular Disorders, Sensory Integrative Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder; people who are d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing or deafened; those with mobility issues; and those with babes in arms, and anyone else who may feel they could benefit from this style of performance. For anyone who would not enjoy this relaxed audience environment, we invite you to attend any of our other regular performances.

We are thrilled to announce that Angela Southern will be the next recipient of MTP’s annual Lifetime Membership honour. Each year, the MTP board selects individuals whose support of MTP and contributions to the London community at large deserve recognition.

Angela Southern is well-known in the London theatre community and abroad as a powerhouse onstage and a tour de force in the pit. Angela’s involvement with Musical Theatre Productions (then London Musical Theatre) started right from the beginning, appearing in the ensemble of its inaugural production, Evita, in 1988. Angela went on to appear onstage in numerous productions including The Music Man, Patience, South Pacific, The Pajama Game, Anything Goes – where she took over the lead role of Reno Sweeney just a few weeks before opening, Trix tha Aviatrix in The Drowsy Chaperone, and Gypsy which earned her a Brickenden Award for her portrayal of Mama Rose. A talented musician as well, Angela appeared in the orchestra of Chess and then began music directing such productions as Dreaming by Starlight and Bat Boy, in addition to taking the helm as director for Little Shop of Horrors, Nunsense and Songs for a New World, co-directed by Nicole Newell. Angela formed many strong bonds with her fellow thespians, teaming up with Anne Cuthbert and Laura Wood on numerous productions, and eventually marrying her South Pacific castmate, Sam Shoebottom, before team up with him as music director for Jesus Christ Superstar. But Angela’s talents were not restricted to MTP as she also worked with many companies in her years of treading the boards on and offstage, collaborating with the Grand Theatre, Fountainhead Theatre, Fuse Theatre, Theatre Uppercut, Huron County Playhouse, London Community Players, Passionfool, LYTE and Original Kids. Angela is in her 21st year teaching at Parkside Secondary School in St. Thomas, where she is currently the Head of Performing Arts to her Lammies.

Join us on Friday March 8th, on the Auburn Stage – The Grand Theatre, for a special honouring of Angela Southern, at the 7:30pm performance of Stephen Sondheim’s COMPANY. After the show, join us for a reception in her honour as well as that of the talented cast and crew of this musical masterpiece.
